I have a question for my baseball-oriented friends. Does anyone know what percentage of baseballs that are hit into fair territory end up as a hit (or any other kind of result)?
So just over one year ago, I walked all over the northeast corner of San Francisco, including downtown, with my brother, covering eight and a half miles on foot, including two large hills. Since we took BART/CalTrain to get there, we walked a dozen miles that day. Three and a half months ago, I saw Civic Center, U.N. Plaza, and Japan Town — not as much walking, but still quality sightseeing.
Yesterday, the CBAA and Cal Band did a joint performance at the AIDS Walk in Golden Gate Park. Afterward, I took the opportunity to do another on-foot sightseeing trip of an area of San Francisco.
peaceoutforlife and I basically walked over all of the Golden Gate Park/Panhandle area. Actually, we ended up reaching the east end of Golden Gate Park right on Haight St., so we decided to explore Upper Haight, including, of course, Haight and Ashbury. All told, we walked over twelve and a half miles yesterday. So, I saw more of San Francisco than I did on my trip with my brother, but I did just about the same amount of walking, since we drove yesterday.
After reviewing our trip, it appears that I saw more or less everything in the park I intended to see, though there are three or four places I need to go back to check out in more detail.
Why in hell is Enegizer buying Playtex?
My project of creating a personal worldwide web and e-mail server is coming along nicely in that I currently have a computer with a public domain name running functioning www and e-mail servers. So that makes me happy. Now I just need to spend the next several months making them useful.
On an unrelated topic, I had opened a particular kind of computer archive file in an editor at work today, and I noticed that emacs has a variable named "tar-anal-blocksize". Poor choice concerning abbreviation, I'd say.
If any of you were wondering why I haven't updated lately, it's because I have nothing to update. I work approximately 40 hours each week, I watch a lot of TV, I keep up with the news, I sleep, and I poke around my two new computers in what time I have remaining. The only news I have is that this September I'll be starting my part-time masters program at the Farm, which does at least mean that I'll only be stuck in this rut for at most five more months.
And the only reason I'm making this post is because today I ran across something which I know at least one of you will be interested in, the secret of awesome Mavericks waves.
Antitrust law losing its teeth
I don't necessarily disagree with any of the anti-antitrust theories in this story, but I thought this administration was opposed to judges who legislate from the bench. If the Bush administration thinks that an active law is wrong, shouldn't it send a bill to Congress to repeal it? Oh wait, I'm expecting consistency and cooperative behavior from our current President. Silly me.
Yes, one (two?) of my pet peeves are definitely hypocrisy and double-standards.
P.S. I really like my quadruple negative.
The second one is pretty funny, too.
Godspeed, Mrs. Edwards

sympathetic
Current Music: Before He Cheats
I really feel for John and Elizabeth Edwards. Not only do I think he has the best shot of winning the general election out of all of the Democratic candidates, but he seems like the most genuine of the candidates. Based on the five-year survival rate for metastatic breast cancer it seems likely that if John wins the Presidency, Elizabeth will not survive his term of office. Adding this news on top of the cancer she's already fought and the death of their son several years ago makes me really sympathetic for the Edwards family. I really hope they get their wishes answered over the next several years.
